Intermediate School Model Positively Impacts Student Achievement: DPI Data Supports Conclusion


New Study Proves 5-6 (intermediate) and 7-8 (middle) School Model Successful

According to reports from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), intermediate schools throughout WI - and in districts similar in size to West De Pere – are outperforming schools in the West De Pere School District. 

DPI releases an “Accountability Report Card” for every school in the state of WI. In addition to schools receiving an overall score (0-100), the report card identifies four “priority areas” that the overall score is derived from: Student Achievement, School Growth, Closing Gaps, and On-Track and Postsecondary Readiness. The graphs below compare West De Pere Middle School to 8 intermediate schools in WI. Overall, West De Pere finishes in last place, and in a virtual tie with Howard-Suamico.


There has been research/data circulating that suggests West De Pere’s student achievement and potential will decline if the district were to move to a 5-6/7-8 model. That information is inconclusive at best, and deceptive at worst. In light of the sharing of those reports, it’s important to study the data about the intermediate model as it exists in present day WI.


If the West De Pere Community wants to make a statement, if they want to invest in the future of the community and the country, and if they want to ensure that the students in WDP have the best education possible, they will VOTE YES on 11/6 for the WDP School Referendum.
